How does the EV Range Calculator work?

The calculator reduces usable battery capacity by the reserve percentage you want to keep, adjusts the miles-per-kWh efficiency by the driving-condition percentage, and multiplies available energy by adjusted efficiency. The result is a planning-range scenario based entirely on the assumptions you enter.

For example, a negative efficiency adjustment can represent colder weather, higher speeds, towing or other conditions that reduce expected efficiency. A positive adjustment can model unusually efficient conditions, but realistic values should be based on your vehicle experience.

Where should the efficiency number come from?

Use a recent trip average from the vehicle, a route-planning assumption or an energy-consumption figure converted to miles per kWh. DOE notes that EV energy efficiency may also be shown as kWh per 100 miles; if your vehicle reports that format, miles per kWh equals 100 divided by kWh per 100 miles.

Why should range planning include a reserve and condition adjustment?

Drivers often want remaining battery at arrival instead of planning to reach exactly zero. The reserve field removes that energy from the usable trip budget. Temperature, HVAC, elevation, speed, wind, cargo and towing can also change energy consumption, so the adjustment field lets you create a conservative scenario.

What this EV range result cannot predict

The calculator does not know battery temperature, route elevation, charger availability, battery degradation or real-time weather. It is useful for “what if” planning, not as a guarantee of distance remaining. Vehicle-displayed range and manufacturer guidance should take priority while driving.
