How does the Gas Mileage Calculator work?

This calculator divides miles driven by gallons used to estimate miles per gallon (MPG). The distance and fuel quantity must describe the same driving period—for example, miles traveled since the last fill-up and the gallons required to refill the tank. The result also converts the same consumption to gallons per 100 miles and liters per 100 kilometers so you can compare common fuel-economy formats. For a useful real-world check, reset the trip odometer at a full tank, drive normally, then refill the tank and record the gallons dispensed. A single tank can be affected by traffic, weather, idling and fill variation, so averaging several tanks gives a more stable picture.

What should you enter for an accurate MPG estimate?
