What does this life expectancy calculator measure?
This life expectancy calculator by age reads the SSA 2023 period life table used in the 2026 Trustees Report. For the selected exact age and male or female table cohort, it reports the published mean number of remaining years. It describes the US Social Security area population represented by that table.
The result is conditional on having reached the selected age. It is not life expectancy at birth with your age simply subtracted. Someone who has already reached an older age has survived earlier risks, so their remaining expectancy must come from that age’s row.
How to look up mean remaining years
Enter a whole age from 0 to 100 and select the male or female cohort as defined in the original table. These are the source’s sex-specific population series, not an individualized assessment of gender, medical history or physiology. Fractional ages are outside this lookup’s scope.
Calculate to view remaining years, the corresponding mean attained age and a timeline. No name, date of birth, location or health answers are requested. Changing the age or cohort clears the prior output. Use the Age Calculator if you need help finding a whole age from dates.

SSA period life table method
The remaining-years answer is a direct lookup of the published life expectancy at exact age x. Mean attained age = x + mean remaining years. The lookup retains the source’s two decimal places; it does not invent extra precision by interpolating unpublished values.
A period table applies the age-specific mortality rates of one year across a hypothetical remaining lifetime. Here those mortality rates are from 2023. A cohort projection would instead account for mortality changes as a real birth cohort ages; that is a different model and is not calculated here.
How to read the population-mean timeline
Gold shows current age measured from birth; cyan shows the published mean remaining years. Both segments use one linear year scale. Their combined length is the mean attained age under the selected table, not a limit on how long a person can live.
The illustrated remaining segment is not a countdown or a probability interval. The table mean alone cannot tell you the probability of living to a specific age, a likely death date or how much any one lifestyle choice would change your lifespan. No such inference is made.

Worked example: remaining years at age 65
At exact age 65, the SSA 2023 male table reports 18.12 remaining years. The corresponding mean attained age is 65 + 18.12 = 83.12 years. The female table reports 20.66 remaining years, corresponding to 85.66 years. These are population-table means.
At birth, the same table reports 75.79 years for males and 81.06 years for females. Subtracting 65 from those birth figures would not reproduce the age-65 lookup. This difference illustrates why survival to the entered age matters.

Population scope and personal-prediction limits
This is a historical period-table estimate, not a worldwide longevity model. Future mortality, individual illness, accidents, family history and social circumstances can differ from the table assumptions. The SSA publication context does not make the result an assessment of benefit eligibility or personal financial adequacy.
No health questionnaire, arbitrary lifestyle bonus, medical diagnosis, death date or treatment recommendation is included. For personal health decisions, discuss appropriate evidence with a qualified professional. For planning, consider multiple horizons rather than treating a population mean as a guaranteed lifespan.
