How does the Tile Calculator work?
The tile calculator first finds project area from length × width. It adds the waste percentage you select, then converts the individual tile dimensions from square inches to square feet and divides purchase area by tile face area. The tile count is rounded up to a whole piece.
If you also enter square-foot coverage per box, the calculator estimates whole boxes independently from the purchase area. This is useful because a box count based on the manufacturer’s stated coverage may be more practical than multiplying a theoretical piece count. How to measure a tile project
Measure the length and width of each rectangular floor or wall section in feet. For backsplashes, showers and walls with openings, calculate each tiled rectangle and subtract large areas that will not receive tile. Small penetrations are often better handled through the waste allowance than through many tiny deductions. The Square Footage Calculator can be used to check large rectangular wall or floor sections first.
Enter the nominal or actual tile length and width in inches consistently with the product information. Decorative patterns using multiple tile sizes should be estimated by pattern coverage rather than treating every piece as one identical rectangle.
Tile waste depends strongly on layout
Straight layouts in simple rooms can create fewer offcuts than diagonal patterns, herringbone, borders or rooms with many corners. Breakage, shade/dye-lot matching and the desire to keep replacement pieces can also increase the purchase quantity. Choose a waste allowance based on the actual layout and installer or manufacturer guidance.
The calculator uses tile face dimensions and does not subtract grout-joint width from the project. For purchasing, box coverage printed by the manufacturer is often the better package-level check because it reflects how the product is sold.
What the tile estimate does not include
The result estimates tile pieces and optional boxes only. Mortar, grout, membrane, backer board, trim profiles and movement joints require separate quantities. Substrate preparation and wet-area assemblies can have code and manufacturer requirements that are not captured by an area calculator.
