Debt calculations depend on consistent definitions. Use balances, rates, payments, and time periods from the same statement date whenever possible. A mathematically correct answer can still differ from a creditor’s schedule when the contract uses daily interest, changing minimums, new transactions, promotional rules, fees, or a different payment date.

How to use the Debt Consolidation Calculator

Formula and calculation method

New payment = financed balance × monthly rate ÷ [1 − (1 + monthly rate)^−term]

The calculator validates the entries, prevents unsupported values, performs the displayed formula or monthly simulation, and formats the answer for U.S. dollars and percentages. Calculations run locally in the browser.

How to understand the result

The comparison models the current debt as one weighted-rate balance and the new loan as fixed monthly payments. Real accounts can use different compounding and fee treatment.

The large gradient figure is the primary answer. The status badge and colored scale summarize the result context without claiming approval or predicting a credit score. Always compare total repayment, monthly cash flow, fees, payoff time, rate type, and lost protections together. A lower rate is not automatically better if the term is extended, substantial fees apply, or important borrower benefits disappear.

Example and practical interpretation

A lower APR can reduce interest, but a longer term or origination fee can reduce or eliminate the savings. Compare total cost, not payment alone.

Use the answer as a planning checkpoint and reconcile it with the creditor’s written disclosure. If results differ, review payment dates, compounding, promotional expiration, statement balance changes, and whether fees were financed.
