How does the Fence Calculator work?

The fence calculator starts with total fence length and subtracts the combined width of gate openings. It divides the remaining fence length by the maximum post spacing and rounds up to estimate fence sections. Posts are based on those sections plus an end post and the number of gates entered.

Rails are estimated from sections × rails per section. Pickets are calculated from the remaining non-gate fence length divided by the installed picket module (picket width plus gap). This model is intended for a simple straight or segmented picket-style fence and is most useful for early material planning.

How to measure a fence run and gate openings

Measure the fence path along the planned line, not the straight-line distance between endpoints when the fence changes direction. Add all gate opening widths and enter their combined length. The number of gates is entered separately because gates can require additional posts even though their widths are removed from the picket run.

For corners, slope changes and separate fence runs, a sketch with segment lengths is helpful. The calculator uses one maximum post spacing across the non-gate length, so panelized systems with fixed panel widths may be better planned section by section.

Post spacing and picket spacing affect different counts

Post spacing controls the number of fence sections and therefore the rail estimate. Picket width plus picket gap controls the picket count. Changing one does not automatically change the other. Use actual product dimensions and the spacing allowed by the fence system.

The basic result does not add dedicated corner-post rules, end assemblies, braces, gate hardware or spare pickets. Grade changes can also alter picket length and section layout. Fence quantity is only one part of project planning

The calculator does not locate property lines, underground utilities, easements or required setbacks, and it does not determine footing depth or wind design. Before installation, confirm boundaries, utility-marking requirements, permits and local fence rules. Structural gate posts and high-wind conditions may need different details than a simple material count suggests.
