How does the Gravel Calculator work?
The gravel calculator finds the volume of a rectangular layer from length, width and depth. Length and width are entered in feet, depth is entered in inches, and the tool converts the result to cubic feet and cubic yards. An optional overage percentage can be added for grading or project tolerance.
If you enter a supplier-provided density in tons per cubic yard, the result panel also estimates tons. That conversion is intentionally optional because gravel density can vary significantly by stone type, gradation, moisture and compaction. How to measure a gravel area and depth
Measure the finished length and width of the gravel footprint. Depth should represent the compacted or installed layer you intend to create, not simply the excavation depth if other materials occupy part of the section. If multiple layers use different aggregate—such as a coarse base and finer top course—calculate each layer separately because depth and density can differ. The volume math is the same, but the tonnage conversion should use the supplier value for each material.
Why gravel volume and gravel tons are not fixed equivalents
Cubic yards measure volume; tons measure mass. The same cubic yard can weigh differently depending on aggregate type, particle size, moisture and how densely it is placed. Enter the tons-per-cubic-yard value from the quarry or landscape supplier when available instead of assuming one universal density.
An overage can help account for grade variation, settlement and small field-measurement differences, but it does not replace proper base design or compaction planning. Use the gravel result as a material-volume estimate
The calculator does not determine the correct aggregate gradation, drainage section, geotextile, compaction target or pavement/base thickness. Those choices depend on soil, traffic, climate and the project design. Confirm the material and density with the supplier before converting the cubic-yard estimate into a purchase order.
