How does the Roof Pitch Calculator work?

The roof pitch calculator converts a measured rise and horizontal run into four related slope values: pitch per 12 inches of run, roof angle in degrees, slope percentage and a rafter-length multiplier. The core ratio is rise ÷ run. Multiplying that ratio by 12 expresses the familiar “x in 12” roof pitch, while arctangent converts the same ratio to an angle.

The rafter multiplier is the hypotenuse factor √(1 + ratio²). It can be used to convert horizontal run into theoretical sloped length before allowances for ridge details, tails, cuts or framing connections. If you need material area after pitch is known, continue with the Roofing Calculator.

How to measure rise and run safely

Rise and run must describe the same slope triangle. Run is horizontal distance, not the length measured along the roof surface. For example, a roof that rises 6 inches over 12 inches of horizontal run has a 6:12 pitch. Any matching units can be used because the calculation is based on their ratio.

Whenever possible, use dimensions from plans, attic framing or a safe ground-based/indirect measurement method. Do not climb onto a roof simply to obtain a calculator input. Existing roofs can be slippery, fragile or unsafe without proper fall protection and access equipment. Pitch, angle and rafter multiplier answer different questions

Pitch per 12 is a construction convention; angle is useful when comparing slope in degrees; slope percentage expresses rise as a percent of horizontal run; and the rafter multiplier shows how much longer the sloped line is than the horizontal run. These outputs are mathematically related but they are not interchangeable labels.

The multiplier is geometric only. A framing member’s actual cut length may include ridge adjustments, birdsmouth location, overhang or tail length. Material limits and code requirements can also depend on slope, so use project documents rather than the multiplier alone for fabrication. For roof-covering quantities after pitch is established, use a dedicated roof-area calculation rather than treating rafter length as roof area.

What roof pitch does not tell you

Pitch describes geometry, not structural capacity. It cannot determine rafter span, truss design, snow or wind resistance, drainage performance, or whether a specific roof covering is allowed.
