How does the Roofing Calculator work?

This calculator estimates a simple gable-style roof from building length, building width, roof rise per 12 inches of horizontal run, optional overhang and waste. It expands the footprint by the overhang, applies a slope multiplier based on the entered pitch, then adds the selected waste percentage. The purchase area is divided by 100 because one roofing square represents 100 square feet of roof area.

If you enter bundles per roofing square, the tool also estimates a whole-bundle count. That field is optional because bundle coverage is product-specific. For a roof whose rise and run are known but pitch is not, use the Roof Pitch Calculator first.

How to measure a roof for this estimate

Use the building dimensions below the roof and enter the horizontal overhang on each side. The calculator assumes the same overhang is added to both ends of the length and both sides of the width. Enter pitch as inches of rise for every 12 inches of run, such as 6 for a 6:12 roof.

Complex roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, intersecting sections or different pitches should be split into individual roof planes and measured from plans or field dimensions. A single rectangular footprint cannot capture those shapes accurately. For a known horizontal footprint before slope is applied, the Square Footage Calculator can provide a separate area check.

Roofing squares, bundles and waste are different quantities

A roofing square is an area unit equal to 100 sq ft; it is not the same thing as one bundle. Some shingle systems use three bundles per square, but products can differ, so enter the bundle rate from the actual packaging or manufacturer literature. The calculator rounds the optional bundle result up to a whole bundle.

Waste is affected by roof geometry, starter courses, valleys, hips, ridges and cutting. The percentage field applies a simple area allowance; it does not separately calculate ridge cap, starter strip, underlayment, flashing, drip edge or ventilation components. Use the roofing result for material planning, not roof design

The tool estimates surface material area. It does not determine rafter or truss sizing, snow/wind loads, fastening schedules, ventilation, ice-barrier requirements or whether a roofing product is permitted at a given slope.
