Asphalt calculator: square feet to tons
Estimate asphalt mass from a rectangular surface or a known measured area, the finished compacted thickness and a supplier-provided compacted mix density. The tool shows both US short tons and metric tonnes, with an optional ordering allowance and asphalt-only material subtotal.
Area by itself cannot determine tonnage: thickness and density are also required. The existing Gravel Calculator covers aggregate quantities; this page uses explicit asphalt density units and distinguishes US short tons from metric tonnes. It does not select a pavement structure or obtain live quotes.

Optional measuring wheels (paid link) can help measure several driveway sections before adding their areas. No purchase is required.
Enter driveway area, thickness and asphalt density
- Select feet/inches with density in lb/ft³, or meters/millimeters with density in kg/m³.
- Choose rectangle dimensions or enter a known area in square feet or square meters.
- Enter the finished compacted asphalt thickness and the compacted density for the supplied mix.
- Enter an ordering allowance, if needed. It adds material mass after the geometric calculation.
- Optionally enter a price per US short ton or metric tonne and a currency label, then calculate.
Changing measurement systems clears measurement and density fields; it does not reinterpret old numbers. Switching between rectangle and known-area modes clears the result and uses only the visible area inputs. Optional measuring tapes (paid link) can help record the thickness from the project plan.
Add separate irregular sections using the Square Footage Calculator. Calculate different finished thicknesses separately. Density is required rather than silently assuming that every asphalt mix has the same density.
Asphalt tonnage formula and worked example
Mass = finished volume × compacted mix density
Ordering mass = mass × (1 + allowance/100)
US short tons = pounds ÷ 2,000
Metric tonnes = kilograms ÷ 1,000
With US inputs, convert inches to feet before multiplying square feet by thickness. With metric inputs, divide millimeters by 1,000 before multiplying square meters by thickness. Internally the calculation uses meters and kilograms. Exactly 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg and 1 US short ton = 907.18474 kg. A UK long ton is not used.
Example assumptions: 1,000 sq ft, 3 in finished thickness, 145 lb/ft³ density and 5% allowance. Volume = 1,000 × 3/12 = 250 ft³. Mass = 250 × 145 = 36,250 lb; after allowance, 38,062.5 lb. That is 19.03125 US short tons, or approximately 17.2649 metric tonnes. The density and thickness are example inputs, not universal product or installation specifications.
Compacted thickness, density and supplier checks
Use a density consistent with the finished compacted layer represented by the entered thickness. Loose truck volume and loose bulk density are different quantities. Adding an arbitrary compaction multiplier to an already compacted thickness-and-density estimate can count the same effect twice.
The allowance is simply your chosen percentage for ordering uncertainty. Actual material needs can vary with levels, surface profile, compaction and mix. This calculator does not design layer thickness, base preparation, drainage, structural capacity or repair suitability. Optional spirit levels (paid link) can assist measurement against an approved plan; professional site decisions remain separate.
The tool supports positive area, thickness and density, with 0–100% allowance. It limits project area to one billion m², calculated mass to one trillion kg, and price to ten million currency units per selected ton unit. Input limits keep calculations finite, not construction-approved.
Optional asphalt material cost per ton or tonne
Choose the unit printed on your supplier quote. The subtotal is ordering mass in that unit multiplied by the entered price. A quote per US short ton is different from a quote per metric tonne. The measurement system does not override your price-unit selection. Currency labels do not convert money.
For the example above at USD 100 per US short ton, the asphalt-only subtotal is approximately USD 1,903.13. Labor, removal, gravel base, tack coat, transport, equipment, tax and minimum loads are excluded. Blank price means no subtotal; zero is allowed. Optional construction notebooks (paid link) can help keep assumptions and supplier quotes together.
A concrete alternative uses a volume calculation, available in the Concrete Calculator. Check the Home & Construction category for related material planning tools.
Asphalt Calculator FAQs
Multiply square feet by thickness in feet and density in pounds per cubic foot, apply the allowance and divide pounds by 2,000 for US short tons.
No. A US short ton is 2,000 lb or 907.18474 kg. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. The calculator displays both and does not use UK long tons.
Use your supplier’s compacted mix density in the units shown. Density varies; there is no universal value silently applied by this calculator.
Yes. Choose known area and enter square feet or square meters. Rectangle mode instead calculates the area from length and width.
No. It covers asphalt material mass times the entered price per selected ton unit. It excludes labor, base, removal, delivery, equipment, tax and minimum loads.
Use finished compacted thickness with a consistent compacted mix density. The calculator does not determine a suitable pavement thickness or compaction design.
