Paver calculator for patio materials
This paver calculator estimates the number of rectangular pavers needed for a rectangular patio or path, together with gravel base and bedding sand volumes. It uses the selected paver size and joint spacing as a repeating coverage module. A separate paver allowance covers the percentage you enter for cuts and breakage; base and sand have their own volume allowance.
Unlike the Tile Calculator, this tool combines outdoor paving coverage, spacing and two supporting material layers in one estimate. For a standalone aggregate volume or weight, use the Gravel Calculator.

Optional measuring tapes (paid link) can help measure each rectangular section. No purchase is needed to use the calculator.
How to enter paver size, spacing and depths
- Choose feet/inches or meters/millimeters before entering measurements. Changing the system clears measurements to avoid reinterpreting a number in a different unit.
- Enter the project length and width, paver face length and width, and the intended joint spacing.
- Enter the gravel base and bedding sand finished depths from your project specification. Enter zero for a layer you do not want to estimate.
- Choose separate paver and aggregate allowances. A blank allowance means zero.
- Optionally enter a price per paver and its currency label, then calculate.
Check actual face dimensions and the manufacturer’s coverage information. If a stated nominal dimension already includes the joint, use the actual face dimension plus the actual joint, or enter the nominal module dimension with zero extra gap; do not count the joint twice. Optional paver spacers (paid link) should match the specified paving system.
For irregular areas, split the footprint into rectangles. The Square Footage Calculator can help check surface areas. This page does not generate an exact cutting plan, a circular layout or a mixed-size pattern.
Paver count and base material formulas
Module area = (paver length + joint) × (paver width + joint)
Pavers = round up [area ÷ module area × (1 + paver allowance/100)]
Layer volume = area × finished depth
Layer estimate = layer volume × (1 + aggregate allowance/100)
The module method averages repeated joints across the surface. It is an approximate area-coverage method: it does not enumerate full rows, boundary joints or reusable cut pieces. Borders, angled layouts, product coverage, pallet sizes and minimum order quantities can change the final purchase. Pavers round up once after the allowance; volumes retain calculation precision and are displayed to at most four decimal places.
Example: a 12 ft × 10 ft patio with 8 in × 4 in pavers, zero extra spacing and 5% paver allowance gives 120 ÷ (32/144) × 1.05 = 567 pavers. At a 4 in gravel depth and 1 in sand depth with zero aggregate allowance, the base is about 1.4815 yd³ and bedding sand about 0.3704 yd³. These depths are arithmetic examples, not installation recommendations.
Base depth, bedding sand and project limitations
Depths must come from the chosen paving system and the site requirements. This calculator does not design a base, drainage fall, frost protection, soil preparation or vehicle loading. The bedding sand volume excludes joint-filling or polymeric sand. Those products need manufacturer coverage tables because joint width, paver thickness and product behavior matter.
The aggregate allowance is an explicit extra-volume percentage, not a tested conversion from compacted volume to loose delivery volume. Ask the supplier how to order for your planned finished layer. Optional spirit levels (paid link) can help check measurements against a plan; they do not establish a suitable drainage design.
Use one consistently oriented rectangular paver size. Gap must be smaller than both face dimensions. Counts are limited to one billion, project area to one billion m², and numeric inputs have finite limits shown by validation. Very small displayed quantities may round to zero; use the steps and your supplier’s order increments.
Optional paver material cost
The subtotal multiplies the rounded-up paver count by your entered price per paver. It includes the paver allowance already counted, but excludes gravel, sand, edging, labor, delivery, equipment, tax and order minimums. Blank price means no cost estimate; a price of zero is accepted. Currency is a label, not an exchange-rate conversion.
For the 567-paver example at USD 2 each, the paver-only subtotal is USD 1,134.00. Optional construction notebooks (paid link) can help record supplier coverage and package sizes before ordering. If pouring a slab instead of using pavers, try the existing Concrete Calculator.
Paver Calculator FAQs
Divide rectangular project area by the repeating paver module area, apply your paver allowance and round up once. The result is approximate coverage, not an exact cutting layout.
Yes. It adds the entered joint width to both face dimensions of a repeating rectangular module. Do not add the gap twice if your product dimensions already include it.
Yes. Each finished layer volume equals area times its entered depth, with a separate optional aggregate allowance. Joint-filling sand is excluded.
Yes. Choose meters for the project and millimeters for pavers, joints and layer depths. Results include both cubic meters and cubic yards.
Only rounded-up paver count times your price per paver. Sand, gravel, edging, labor, delivery, tax and package rounding are excluded.
No. Enter depths specified for the paving system and site. The calculator does not design drainage, frost protection or load capacity.
