Brick calculator for wall quantities

This brick calculator estimates rectangular face coverage for a single wall leaf, using your actual brick face dimensions and the mortar-joint width. Subtract the total area of doors or windows, apply a waste percentage and round up to a whole-brick order estimate. An optional price per brick gives a brick-only material subtotal.

The tool models one leaf rather than a full house or a multi-leaf assembly. Wall bond, corner returns, lintels, reveals, reinforcement and pack sizes need separate planning. For horizontal paving instead, use the existing Paver Calculator, which also estimates gravel base and bedding sand.

Optional measuring tapes (paid link) can help record wall dimensions and openings before calculating. No purchase is required.

Enter wall dimensions, openings and mortar joints

  1. Choose feet/inches or meters/millimeters before entering measurements. A unit-system change clears dimensional inputs and the old result.
  2. Enter the rectangular wall length and height. Add the face areas of all openings and enter their combined area in square feet or square meters.
  3. Enter actual brick face length and face height, followed by the planned mortar-joint width in the displayed unit.
  4. Choose the waste percentage. A blank waste or opening field means zero.
  5. Optionally enter price per brick and a currency label, then calculate.

For a rectangular opening, multiply width by height before adding it to the other openings. The Square Footage Calculator can help check these areas. Opening area cannot exceed the gross wall face. If it equals gross area, the modeled brick quantity is zero.

The repeating module includes one horizontal and one vertical joint. If a nominal product dimension already includes its joint, either use actual face dimensions with the actual joint, or use the nominal module with zero extra joint. Optional masonry joint gauges (paid link) can help compare the specification with the measured joint; a product’s declared coverage remains the purchasing reference.

Brick wall area and quantity formulas

Gross face area = wall length × wall height
Net face area = gross area − openings
Brick module area = (face length + joint) × (face height + joint)
Order estimate = ceil[net area ÷ module area × (1 + waste/100)]

All areas must use compatible units. The calculation converts lengths to meters internally; US square feet are converted using 1 ft = 0.3048 m, and inches using 1 in = 0.0254 m. Fractional coverage is retained until waste is applied, then the final count rounds up once. A small floating-point boundary correction avoids adding a brick solely because an effectively whole number is represented slightly above that number.

This averages repeated joints across the wall face. It does not lay out full courses or optimize reusable cut bricks. Curved walls, piers, headers, pattern bonds, multiple leaves and detailed opening edges can require a different takeoff.

Worked brick quantity examples in metric and US units

Metric example: wall 10 m × 2 m, openings 2 m², actual brick face 215 mm × 65 mm, joint 10 mm and waste 5%. Net face area is 20 − 2 = 18 m². Module area is 0.225 × 0.075 = 0.016875 m². The base count is about 1,066.6667 bricks; multiplying by 1.05 gives 1,120, so the order estimate is 1,120 bricks.

At an entered price of GBP 0.70 per brick, the brick-only subtotal is GBP 784.00. That price is an arithmetic assumption, not a current supplier quote.

US example: wall 10 ft × 8 ft, openings 8 ft², actual brick face 7.5 in × 2.5 in, joint 0.5 in and 5% waste. Net face area is 72 ft²; module coverage is 8 × 3 / 144 = 1/6 ft². Base coverage is 432 bricks and 432 × 1.05 = 453.6, which rounds up to 454. These are example dimensions, not a universal national brick size.

Waste, cost and the limits of a brick estimate

The optional subtotal equals rounded-up bricks times your entered unit price. It excludes mortar, lintels, ties, reinforcement, labor, delivery, tax and supplier pack rounding. A blank price omits cost; zero is accepted. Currency identifies the quote and does not perform an exchange-rate conversion.

Mortar-joint width affects face coverage, but this tool does not calculate mortar volume, dry-material ratios or bags. Frogs, holes, bedding practice and product yield can make a simple volume subtraction misleading. Confirm mortar requirements separately with the selected product.

The calculator does not establish wall strength, footing design, allowable height, structural suitability or code compliance. Optional spirit levels (paid link) can help check measurements against the plan. For a separately specified rectangular concrete volume, use the Concrete Calculator.

Record actual versus nominal sizes and the supplier’s minimum purchase units in optional construction notebooks (paid link). Numeric limits keep quantities finite: counts and wall areas are limited to one billion, costs to one trillion currency units and waste to 0–100%. Display quantities use up to four decimals and money two; internal precision is retained for calculation.

Brick Calculator FAQs

Subtract opening area from gross wall face area, divide by the repeating brick-and-joint module area, apply your waste percentage and round up once. The result models one rectangular wall leaf.

Yes. Add the entered joint width to both actual face dimensions. If using nominal dimensions that already include the joint, enter zero extra joint so it is not counted twice.

Yes. Enter the combined opening face area in square feet or square meters. It cannot exceed the gross wall face. Reveals and lintels are not added.

Yes. The result shows coverage before waste in the selected area unit. Choose metric or US measurements before entering dimensions.

No. It estimates brick face coverage for one leaf. Mortar volume, bags, bond-specific layouts, corners, lintels and multi-leaf assemblies need separate planning.

Only rounded-up bricks times your price per brick. Mortar, labor, delivery, tax and pack rounding are excluded. Currency is a label, not an exchange-rate conversion.
