Retaining wall calculator for blocks, caps and cost

Estimate quantities for a straight, level run of segmental retaining-wall blocks. The tool rounds up blocks per course and exposed body courses, adds the number of whole buried courses you enter, and applies your waste percentage. Caps use their own effective linear coverage rather than assuming the same length as body blocks.

Exposed body height means the above-grade height of the block body, excluding any cap. Buried courses are additional below-grade material. The result is a quantity estimate from your plan; it does not determine whether a wall height or installation is structurally suitable.

Measure effective block coverage and buried courses

  1. Select US feet/inches or metric meters/millimeters. Changing units clears dimensional inputs.
  2. Enter wall length and exposed body height, excluding caps and fully buried courses.
  3. Enter the product’s effective horizontal block length and effective course height. Use the installed coverage module, accounting for the system’s actual joint or overlap conventions.
  4. Enter the whole buried courses specified in your plan and the chosen waste percentage.
  5. If including caps, enter their separate effective linear coverage. Optionally enter all included unit prices for a complete material subtotal.

A whole buried course is treated as one additional complete course below grade along this entire level section. Partly buried blocks, sloped grades, stepped foundations and tiered or curved runs need a section-by-section takeoff. The default zero buried courses is only a blank-start quantity setting, not a recommendation to omit embedment.

Optional masonry string lines (paid link) can provide a straight layout reference. Confirm effective cap coverage with the manufacturer, especially for trapezoidal caps; do not automatically substitute a maximum face length or assume every shape covers the same distance.

Retaining wall block and cap formulas

Blocks per course = ceil[wall length ÷ effective block length]
Exposed courses = ceil[exposed body height ÷ effective course height]
Total body courses = exposed courses + buried courses
Order blocks = ceil[blocks per course × total courses × (1 + waste/100)]
Base caps = ceil[wall length ÷ effective cap coverage]
Order caps = ceil[base caps × (1 + waste/100)]

Here ceil means round up to a whole unit. Rounding courses and each course’s block quantity separately gives a conservative rectangular section estimate; reusable end cuts are not optimized. Waste is then applied to that whole-unit base quantity. Caps are rounded independently, so a cap estimate cannot be inferred from the body-block count.

The calculated whole exposed courses can reach slightly above the entered exposed body height. Steps show both the requested geometry and the modeled rounded height. Total body height includes buried courses and still excludes cap thickness. No cap height or retaining capacity is inferred from a material count.

Worked retaining wall block and material cost example

Example assumptions: a straight 20 ft wall, 2 ft exposed body height, effective blocks 16 in long × 6 in high, one fully buried course and 5% waste. Blocks per course = ceil(240/16) = 15. Exposed courses = ceil(24/6) = 4; adding one buried course gives 5 total. Base body blocks = 15 × 5 = 75. Applying 5% gives ceil(78.75) = 79 body blocks.

With caps covering an effective 18 in each, base caps = ceil(240/18) = 14. After 5% waste, ceil(14 × 1.05) = 15 caps. At entered prices of USD 4 per body block and USD 6 per cap, the selected material subtotal is 79 × 4 + 15 × 6 = USD 406.00. These are example prices and dimensions, not a quote or an installation specification.

Metric check: 6 m length and 0.6 m exposed body height with 400 mm × 200 mm effective body modules, one buried course and 5% waste give 15 blocks per course, 4 total body courses and 63 order blocks. Caps with 500 mm effective coverage give 13 caps after waste.

Material cost exclusions and project limitations

Enter prices for every included item to receive a complete subtotal. If caps are excluded, only a body-block price is needed. With caps included and just one price entered, steps show the priced line item but the result says a unit price is missing instead of presenting a partial amount as the full subtotal. Zero prices are supported; currency is a label only.

The estimate excludes base and drainage aggregate, core fill, reinforcement, geogrid, adhesives, labor, excavation, delivery, tax and minimum orders. The Gravel Calculator can estimate a separately measured aggregate layer; use the dimensions and density specified for that project. For other surface work, compare the Paver Calculator and Landscape Edging Calculator.

No safe height, retaining capacity, soil pressure, surcharge, stability, drainage or reinforcement design is calculated. Follow the selected product plan and project requirements. Optional spirit levels (paid link) may help check measurements against that plan; they do not establish an adequate design.

Optional construction notebooks (paid link) can record effective product coverage, whole buried courses and order pack sizes. The model supports a maximum of 10,000 exposed courses plus 1,000 buried courses and one billion blocks/caps, with 0–100% waste; these numerical bounds are not permissible construction limits. Curves, corners, bond offsets and stepped sections can change orders.

Retaining Wall Calculator FAQs

Round up effective blocks per course and exposed body courses separately, add the entered whole buried courses, multiply, then apply waste and round up the order quantity.

The input is exposed body height only, excluding caps and fully buried courses. Buried courses are added separately. Total body height in the steps still excludes cap thickness.

Caps use their own effective linear coverage. The straight wall length divided by that coverage is rounded up, then waste is applied and rounded up again.

No. It is a material estimator. It does not design stability, drainage, surcharge resistance, reinforcement, foundations or a safe retaining height.

With caps included, a complete subtotal requires both prices. Entered line-item costs appear in the steps, but no complete subtotal is reported while an included price is missing.

No. The optional subtotal covers selected body blocks and caps only. Base, drainage aggregate, core fill, geogrid, adhesive, excavation, labor, delivery and tax are excluded.
