How does the Engine Horsepower Calculator work?

For torque measured in pound-feet and rotational speed in revolutions per minute, horsepower is torque multiplied by RPM and divided by approximately 5,252. The result represents mechanical power at the operating point represented by those two inputs.

If you enter an optional drivetrain-loss percentage, the calculator multiplies calculated engine horsepower by one minus that percentage to show a simple estimated wheel-horsepower scenario. Real drivetrain loss is not a fixed universal percentage.

How are torque, RPM and horsepower related?

Torque describes twisting force, while horsepower describes the rate of doing work. An engine can make the same torque at two different RPM values but produce more horsepower at the higher RPM because the torque is being applied through more revolutions per unit time.

This formula does not create an engine power curve. To understand peak output, torque must be measured across RPM under controlled conditions.

Why can dyno results differ from this calculation?

Dynamometers measure power under specific test conditions and can report at the wheels or apply corrections and drivetrain assumptions. Temperature, pressure, test standard, tire behavior, transmission and equipment setup can affect reported values. The calculator simply converts the torque/RPM pair you provide.
