How does the Tire Size Calculator work?

For a tire labeled 225/50R17, 225 is nominal section width in millimeters, 50 is the aspect ratio, and 17 is wheel diameter in inches. Sidewall height equals width multiplied by aspect ratio, divided by 100, then converted from millimeters to inches. Overall diameter equals wheel diameter plus two sidewalls. Circumference is diameter multiplied by pi. Approximate revolutions per mile are calculated by dividing 63,360 inches per mile by tire circumference. Real loaded rolling circumference can differ from the perfect geometric value.

How do you read a common tire size?

The calculator focuses on the width/aspect/wheel-diameter portion of a common passenger-vehicle size designation. Other markings can describe construction, load index, speed rating, service type and other characteristics. Those are safety-critical specifications and are not replaced by a dimension calculation.

NHTSA recommends using the vehicle owner’s manual or the Tire and Loading Information Label on the driver-side door area to identify the correct tire size and inflation information for the vehicle.

Why is matching overall diameter not enough for tire fitment?

Two tires can have similar calculated diameter but different width, load capacity, speed capability, clearance or rim requirements. Steering, suspension, brakes and electronic stability systems can also be affected by non-original fitments. This calculator only converts dimensions; it does not approve a replacement tire. What can revolutions per mile tell you?

A geometric revolutions-per-mile estimate helps explain why tire diameter changes can influence indicated speed and distance. Smaller diameter generally produces more revolutions per mile, while larger diameter produces fewer. Actual tire deflection and tread wear mean the real rolling value can differ from the geometric estimate.
